• I assume the survey was referring to the U.S. government but the Internet is also used outside the U.S.A. I disagree with government regulation of any kind because one country etc. should not have more control over the internet!
• Your options regarding where spammers get details are limited. I have reason to believe that certain companies I deal with (banks, employment agencies) send out personal profile information to mailing lists, because much of the spam I receive is targeted and addressed to me personally, profiled against my target age group, income, perceived interests, etc. - yet I have never expressed interest in any of these services. Include an option for that. Marketing is a subversion of a capitalist free market, and spam is marketing at its most disgusting.

• There should be severe civil penalties along with minor criminal penalties for this. The nature of the majority of UCE I receive is for non-regulated Viagra, and IPO's of worthless stocks, or in other words, ripoffs targeted at people who don't know better.

An awareness should be created about the spreading of chain letters and the idiots who think Microsoft would actually pay them money for forwarding this crap.
• We use SpamLion - it's 99.99% effective and basically, we just don't see spam anymore... Those who still try to filter spam the old way will just have to keep putting up with it - their loss.

• There are good filters. Use them. Spammers make money because people (AOLamers mostly) click on their links. Stop clicking and get a real ISP, mundanes.

If anyone even dares to think about considering spamming me, it's a simple case of aquiring IP from Email address, and use IP to send VIRUS with instructions to modify BIOS settings and fully OVERCLOCK the processor. Et voila! No more junk mail from THAT server, seeing as how their chip has melted into it's slot and their computer wont boot up! I love the internet ;)

I hate everyone assuming I have a debt problem, want credit cards to get into more debt, buy a cell phone so I can call some sex talker and watch another on some nasty website even though I am a hetrosexual woman. • Mostly, I am disturbed by the pornography that gets sent to me. Advertisments and "get rich" schemes don't bother me as much as that does.

• There is nothing as annoying as opening my email account and seeing tons of junk emails peddeling all sorts of trash (must of it bogus). most of this comes from sites that swear that they will not distribute your email address only to send it to hundreds of advertisers. I feel that all advertisers should clearly mark on their emails where they recieved my email from.

• I stopped using my ISP email address because I couldn't stop spam. Now I use yahoo. It's free, and the spam goes to a separate mailbox that you can look in if you want to. Otherwise, no bother.

• Stopping commercial harrasment is necessary. Researches have to be done by scientists (ophtalmologists and other psychologists) about the "subliminal darkside" side solliscited with the commercial banners on the Net. I am one of these searchers. This is necessary for a democratic use of the Internet. We will win.

• The big difference between UCE and junk snail mail is, I don't have to pay for junk snail mail. If I pay for my internet connection with anything other than an unlimited acccess account, I am paying to download UCE. That is why it should be illegal.

• I startes receiving spams from porn when I was 15. I have no idea how they got my address, but they always do. I try to block the senders, but they always seem to find a way to spam me again.

• My ISP is fine, but I have a Hotmail account, and porn advertisers constantly bombard it. There is a limit on how many addresses you can block (a couple of hundred), and mine is right to the limit and I'm still receiving it. What worries me is that school age children often have hotmail accounts and get bombarded just the same, so it is worrying what sort of stuff they are being exposed to. I know of many people with Hotmail accounts who have the same problem, and I also know plenty of schoolchildren with hotmail accounts. I have complained to Hotmail, but they don't even bother replying!!! I have now begun actively discouraging anyone with school age children not to let them have an account with Hotmail. People should be warned. Also, if people started boycotting their services, they might actually think of doing something about this problem.

• I think that there should have to be an "opt in" list. You only get mail if you elect to. So they should be allowed to send you ONE email, and you have to "opt in" to receive any more. If you do nothing, say within a week, they can't send you anymore email.

• I detest spam, but I really don't think I would like to see the government regulate it. I'm not one of those folks against government regulation in general--I think the EPA is good, for example. And I think government involvment with aspects of the internet is o.k.--for example, requiring all government web sites and the web sites of government contractors to be accessible to the blind. And I think that the government should play an active role in making issues like accessibility known. Also, projects such as building public kiosks, getting schools wired, etc. Those things I think are appropriate roles for the government with regards to the internet. But I don't think the government has any business regulating content--I've been online for many years, and I love the happy anarchy. I'm afraid regulating spam would be a way for the goverment to get it's foot in the door with regards to other content regulation. The net polices itself pretty well, I think. And I think there are definetly more important things for the govermnent to focus on--spam, after all, is really just a big annoyance, and doesn't warrant having one more law on the books.

• I think people should have the opt-in option always. There's a difference between people announcing their business, and spammers. Spammers use unconventional means to solicit people and trick them. Sending out press releases is different, and there should be a distinction between the two. I also don't believe that having an email signature that advertises your company is spam. If the govt. gets involved, they better make sure it's of a criminal nature. Then prosecute them for their crime. But don't make criminals out of people who are trying to make a living, honestly.
